Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Decision To St. Joe's To Open Atlantic 10 Play

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Under driving rain throughout the first half, the La Salle field hockey team hosted Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads and fell 3-1 to the visiting Hawks.

The Hawks' (4-8, 1-0 Atlantic 10) Jordan Martin scored just 2:26 into the contest, taking a long shot from the top of the circle and finding the cage just inside the left post. Martin scored two goals on the day to lead all scorers. The Hawks struck again in the 13th minute when Tori Popinko slapped in a rebound of a Sarah Yerk shot to put the visitors up 2-0.

St. Joe's added a goal just after the halftime break on Martin's second of the game. In the midst of a scrum in front of the cage, Yerk found Martin for the score to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.

Colleen Kempf got one back for the Explorers (4-9, 0-1 Atlantic 10), tipping in a long Olivia Leaman shot in the 48th minute.

The Explorers had opportunities late in the game, earning three penalty corners after the goal. Olivia Shoemaker took back-to-back shots, but SJU backup keeper Amelia Diebner stopped both in relief of starting goalie Rachel Barnett, who came out due to injury.

The Hawks owned a 19-13 advantage on shots and 9-6 edge on penalty corners.

Lisa Shaffer made nine saves for the Explorers. Barnett played the first 54:31, stopping four shots. Diebner played the remainder of the game, stopping five shots.

The Explorers return to action next Friday at Massachusetts at 3 p.m.
