Explorers Drop Match to George Washington in Straight Sets

WASHINGTON D.C – The Explorers traveled south Friday evening for their conference road opener against George Washington. The Colonials controlled the Explorers from start to finish, winning in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-14). Senior outside hitter Rachel Finkbeiner led the Blue & Gold with 7 kills. Sophomore setter Michelle Healy played a strong overall game for the Explorers, notching 4 kills, 10 assists and 5 digs.
 
La Salle hoped to translate their strong third set against Saint Louis into a strong start in their conference road opener against George Washington (7-10; 2-1 A-10). The Colonials stymied the Explorer offense, outhitting the Blue & Gold .352 to .061, on the strength of a 6-2 team block advantage and a 50 to 34 digs advantage.
 
The Explorers dug an early hole in the first set, as the Colonials jumped to an early 8-3 lead enroute to a 25-13 score to take the first set.
 
The Explorers bounced back in the beginning of the second set, trading points with the Colonials through the early portions of the set. With the score knotted at 4-4, the Colonials strung together a 12-4 run to take control of the second set.
 
With George Washington leading two sets to none and smelling the sweep, they jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and never looked back taking the third set and the match.
 
Senior outside hitter Rachel Finkbeiner led the Blue & Gold with 7 kills, the first time she has led the Explorers in kills this season.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Laura Kuhlmeier and junior middle hitter Jennifer Whelan each pitched in 5 kills and 3 digs apiece.
 
Sophomore setter Michelle Healy played a splendid all-around game for the Explorers marking 4 kills, 10 assists and 5 digs. Junior setter Rachel Melich chipped in 10 assists and 7 digs.
 
The Explorers (1-22; 0-5 A-10) return to action tomorrow evening, as they travel to George Mason to take on the Patriots.
