HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. - Senior
Mike Johnson shot a two-over 72 and is tied for 12th place after the opening round at the Temple Invitational, which began on Saturday at Philmont Country Club. After recording a triple-bogey on the second hole, Johnson was one-under the rest of the way with four birdies.
He carded back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes but a bogey on the long, 490-yard par four seventh hole returned him to two-over. He played the next eight holes at two-under, with birdies on holes 10 and 13, both short par fours, to get back to even. Bogeys on 16 and 18 gave him a final score of 72.
Junior
Greg Goodreds had a solid afternoon with his four-over 74. He was two-over at the turn before carding three birdies on the back and was one-over going into 16. He bogeyed the final three holes to finish with his 74, good for a tie for 32nd.
Junior
Matt Plummer rallied from a tough front nine to shoot an 43-37=80 (+10) and is tied for 76th. He combined seven pars and two bogyes on the back to finish as the third Explorer.
Senior
Tommy Horgan (39-44=83, +13) tied for 87th and classmate
Tyler Fewell (41-43=84, +14) tied for 91st with one round to play.
Hartford's Evan Russell tore up the par-70, 6,638 yard course with 10 birdies for a eight-under 62. His team shot a 282 (+2) and leads Harvard and host Temple by four strokes (286). Richmond (287) is in fourth followed by Seton Hall (291). The Explorers shot a 309 and are tied for 14th.
In its first round of the Birdies Fore Breast Cancer fundraiser, La Salle combined for nine birdies.
