RICHMOND, Va. – It was a tale of two halves on Sunday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium, as the La Salle women's soccer team overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the VCU Rams, 2-2.
Kelsey Haycook netted both Explorer goals.
The home team wasted no time getting the offense rolling, as Alex Gogolin scored in the third minute to put the Rams up 1-0. Kailyn Slade made it 2-0 in the 28
th minute when she deposited a rebound in the back of the net.
The score remained 2-0 through the half and until the 56
th minute when
Kelsey Haycook kicked the Explorers in gear. Haycook banged home a reader off a
Kari Nickels cross to chop the VCU lead in half.
Nickels and Haycook hooked up again in the 62
nd minute when Nickels sent a cross in front of the net that Haycook took care of. The two-goal spurt tied the ballgame and proved to be the final score.
Both teams had opportunities in the extra sessions but failed to capitalize. For the match, the Explorers outshot the home team 18-10 and held a 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Jessica Wiggins made three saves in net for the Blue and gold while VCU's Emma Kruse made six.
The Explorers return to action on Friday at 5 PM when they host Saint Joseph's.
