BEDMINSTER, N.J. - The La Salle golf team finished the fall season on a high note, shooting a 300 (+12) to place fifth in the 15-team Barnabas Health Seton Hall Intercollegiate on Monday at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club. The Explorers carded a 306-300=606 (+30) and were three strokes behind fourth-place Monmouth. La Salle posted the third lowest score of the day.
"We ended our fall season on a high note," head coach Brad Kane said. "Mike and Greg were hammers for us this weekend like they were all season."
Senior Mike Johnson and junior Greg Goodreds each tied for eighth with two-over 146s. Goodreds shot the team's best score on Monday with a even-par 72 for his collegiate best finish. Johnson carded a 76 to follow up his 70 on Monday.Â
"I can't say enough about Greg and how much he's improved, more than four shots per round better than last year," Kane said.Â
Freshman Joe Markmann and senior Tommy Horgan each rebounded with four-over 76s. They tied for 52nd with 36-hole scores of 160 (+16). Sophomore Morgan Dougherty rounded out the Explorer lineup with a 78-83=161 (+17) to tie for 59th. His 78 was a collegiate best.Â
"Joe and Tommy really fought back today after rough rounds Sunday," Kane said.Â
The Explorers wrapped up their October Birdies Fore Breast Cancer fundraiser with 37 birdies in four rounds.Â
"This was really a record-breaking season for us," Kane said. "It's funny, we shoot 306-300 and finish tied for fifth, which in year's past would have had the team ecstatic and now we can't help but feel like we left a few shots out there. That continues to be a great sign for us and tells you how much better we want to be, and can be."
Minnesota won the team event by 17 strokes with a five-under 571. Temple (588) was second, followed by Seton Hall (596), Monmouth (603), and La Salle (606).
Temple's Brandon Matthews shot a five-under 67 on Monday to win medalist honors with a 137 (-7) by one stroke over Minnesota's Jon Trasamar.Â
La Salle will return to the links on March 3-4 at the Davidson Invitational.
