Field Hockey Wraps Up Regular Season At Richmond, VCU This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle field hockey team concludes the 2013 regular season this weekend with a pair of games in Virginia. The Explorers play at Richmond on Friday at 3:30 PM and at VCU on Sunday at noon.

Scouting the Explorers

After falling 4-2 to Saint Francis last Friday, the Explorers bounced back to rout Saint Louis 7-2 on Sunday. All seven goals were scored by seniors on Senior Day, led by Olivia Shoemaker's first career hat trick. Mariel Papa added two goals, Heather Barretta drained one and assisted on a career-best three, and Jessica Deaner nabbed her first career goal.

With four goals on the weekend (three against SLU and one against SFU), Shoemaker moved into seventh place on La Salle's all-time goals list with 29 career tallies. She also shares seventh place on the all-time points list with former Explorer and high school teammate Becca Chylack after recording her 65th career point. She leads the Explorers this season with 31 points on 13 goals and five assists, ranking fourth in the Atlantic 10 in points and 25th nationally in goals per game.

Junior Maddy Tettelbach has also been an offensive weapon, recording 22 points this season including three assists last weekend. In total, she has seven goals and is tied for the team lead with sophomore Juliana Carfagno with eight assists. With her two Senior Day goals, Mariel Papa now has nine on the season to rank third on the team this year with 18 points.

Keeper Lisa Shaffer picked up her fifth win of the season on Sunday. Shaffer leads the Atlantic 10 with 150 saves and is fifth nationally in saves per game (8.86). She currently holds a .728 save percentage.

Scouting the Spiders

The Spiders split a pair of contests on the road last weekend, falling 2-1 in a penalty stroke shootout at No. 12 Massachusetts on Friday before topping Lock Haven 2-1 on Sunday.

Rebecca Barry leads the Spiders offensively with 30 points this season on 12 goals and six assists. Four more Spiders have 10+ points, including Emma Johansson with 17 points on eight goals and one assist, Taylor Deitrick (6g, 1a) and Chelsea Davies (4g, 5a) with 13 apiece and Amy Cooke with 11 on three goals and five assists.

Keeper Anna Zarkoski leads the Atlantic 10 with a scant 1.10 goals against average and is second in the league with a .828 save percentage.

Scouting the Rams

VCU is looking to stay in contention for a possible Atlantic 10 Championship spot with a pair of games against Saint Joseph's and La Salle this weekend after dropping a pair of contests against UMass and Lock Haven last weekend. The Rams lost 3-0 at Lock Haven before dropping a 3-1 decision at 12th-ranked UMass.

Emilie Soares leads the Rams and ranks second in the A-10 with 34 points this season on 13 goals and eight assists. Kendell Combs has added 18 points on five goals and eight assists, followed by Stephanie Demasi (4g, 7a) and Alexis Schramm (7g, 1a) with 15 points apiece.

Megan Botteri sees the majority of time in goal, recording a 2.54 goals against average and .752 save percentage. Kendall Clifton has also seen 200 minutes in goal and has recorded a 2.43 goals against average and .611 save percentage in that time.
