Deaner Scores Second Goal In As Many Games; Explorers Drop 7-2 Decision At Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior defender Jessica Deaner connected for her second career goal in as many games and senior Olivia Shoemaker upped her team-leading total goals to 14, but the La Salle field hockey squad fell 7-2 to a red-hot Richmond squad at Crenshaw Field on Friday afternoon.

With her goal, Shoemaker now has 30 for her career to move into sixth place in program history.

Senior defender Kelly Rae Wright recorded her first point of the season, assisting on Deaner's goal in the 63rd minute.

Richmond's Rebecca Barry led the home squad with a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in the fourth minute.

Shoemaker's goal came in the 24th minute to cut a 2-0 deficit in half, connecting on a rebound and sailing the ball into the upper right corner of the cage.

The Spiders rattled off five straight spanning both halves, before Deaner broke up the momentum in the 63rd minute. She took a pass from Wright at the top of the box, sailing the ball past Richmond reserve keeper Kelley Wentling.

Lisa Shaffer and Rachel Hartman split time in goal, with each recording two saves. Anna Zarkoski started in goal for the Spiders, recording four saves. Wentling played the final 19 minutes for the home squad.

La Salle dips to 5-13 overall, 1-5 Atlantic 10, while Richmond improves to 12-6 overall, 5-1 Atlantic 10.

The Explorers wrap up the regular season on Sunday when they head to VCU at noon.
