Mariel Papa wrapped up her senior season in style, draining two goals within two minutes late in the second half to put La Salle on top, but VCU forced overtime and eventually won in the 76th minute in a 3-2 decision at Cary Street Field on the VCU campus on Sunday.
All five goals in the game were scored after halftime. VCU's Emilie Soares put the Rams on the board in the 47th minute but the Explorers responded when
Devin Muracco found Papa for the goal at 59:46. Papa then added her second goal at 61:16, taking a pass from
Abbey Lawrence and firing it in at point blank range.
VCU knotted the score in the 67th minute, when Alexis Schramm connected off of a penalty corner to force overtime. Stephanie Demasi tallied the game winner, deflecting in a shot in the 76th minute.
The teams played even ball, taking 16 shots apiece in the game. La Salle held a slim 8-7 edge on penalty corners.
The Explorers conclude their 2013 season at 5-14 (1-6 Atlantic 10), while the Rams improve to 9-9 (4-3 Atlantic 10).
