PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's soccer team enjoyed an early 2-0 lead, but Dayton rattled off three unanswered goals, the last of which came in double overtime in a 3-2 Flyer victory. Senior day festivities were celebrated pre-game as nine Explorers played their last career match at McCarthy Stadium.
The Explorers (6-7-3, 3-2-1 A-10) opened up scoring in the 11
th minute when
Jason Plumhoff sent a beautiful thru ball from midfield onto the foot of
Andrew Connors, who collected the pass and delivered a strike into the net. The goal marked Connors' second of the season.
Plumhoff did not wait long to mount another attack, receiving a nifty pass from
Joe Farrell in the box before being tackled from behind. He was awarded a penalty kick, which he effortlessly snuck inside the right post on the ground to open up a 2-0 La Salle lead.
Dayton (12-2-2, 2-2-2 A-10) then upped its pressure, which paid off in the 41
st minute. Greg Enstone netted his sixth goal of the season off a pass from Rafael Gamboa. Still, the Blue and Gold maintained a 2-1 edge at the break despite being outshot 7-4.
The Flyers tied it up in the 55
th minute when John Howe buried one home off an Abe Keller free kick. Keller's free kick originally found the head of La Salle defender
Mike Stanton, but Howe managed to get his foot on the rebound.
La Salle's defense clamped down the remainder of regulation and managed to keep the Flyers off the board through the first overtime. The second period of extra time, however, proved to be a different story when Andres Acevedo headed in the game-winner in the 106
th minute.
Dayton outshot the home team 20-5 for the game and 7-0 during overtime. They also held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks.
John McCarthy made one save for the Explorers in net while Chris Froschauer made two for the Flyers.
The Explorers will play at Fordham (11/8) and George Washington (11/10) next weekend as their regular season concludes.
