GENEVA,
Ohio – The 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship is underway as the first night of competition has come to a close. Only two events were held tonight – the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 yard freestyle relay.
The Explorer men got things started with a fifth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay in a time of 1:30.90. Senior
Daniel Fitzgerald swam the leadoff backstroke leg and was followed by senior
Blase Szyszko on breaststroke, junior
Greg Fischer on butterfly, and freshman
Jonathan Cabral anchored the relay.
Junior
Cameron Cabrera put together a fantastic swim leading off the 800 yard freestyle relay (6:43.98), touching the wall in 1:39.97. Cabrera's performance made him the first Explorer to break the 1:40.00 barrier since the 2008 A10 Championship. In addition, Cabrera was just sixty-four one-hundredths shy of the school record. That record isn't safe however, Cabrera is entered in the 200 free on Friday so he'll have up to two more opportunities to take it down.
Joining Cabrera on the 800 free relay were seniors
Brian Batson (1:41.85) and
Zach Anderson (1:41.67) and junior
Sean McCall (1:40.49). The men finished in sixth place in the relay and sit in sixth place overall.
The Explorers begin tomorrow morning's preliminary session at 10:30 AM.
