GENEVA, Ohio – This morning's preliminary session of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship was full of fast swims and broken records as the Explorer men rallied from yesterday's mediocre performance as nine swimmers earned spots in tonight's finals. Freshman
Johan Roth and senior
Daniel Fitzgerald broke school records in the 200 yard breaststroke and 100 yard freestyle, respectively, to earn first and third place finishes.
The South African recorded the top time in the 200 breast with a 2:01.08 to break teammate
Blase Szyszko's one-year-old mark of 2:01.35. Szyszko won the event at last year's champs but his 2:03.66 this morning placed him fifth. Roth is sitting in a nice position with a comfortable full second margin over George Washington's Garrett Cottingham.
Senior
Daniel Fitzgerald added yet another school record to his resume. This time he took down the 31-year-old 100 yard freestyle record of 45.24 with a 44.87 to place third heading into tonight's finals. Fitzgerald is joined by fellow senior
Brian Batson who raced to a 46.08 for a 15
th place finish. The two seniors will swim their final competitive races together on the 400 yard freestyle relay to conclude tonight's finals.
On the 3-meter board, freshman
CJ Gimpel and junior

th overall. He'll swim with sophomore
Kip Gravel who posted a 1:52.03 to take 15
th.
In yesterday's 100 yard butterfly, the men's squad failed to place anyone in finals. The result of this morning's 200 yard butterfly was quite the opposite as juniors
Sean McCall,
Greg Fischer, and
Sean McCaffrey qualified for the “B” final. McCall led the way, swimming a 1:53.10 for an 11
th place finish while Fischer touched in 1:53.24 to place 12
th. McCaffrey, however, may have had the most impressive performance – his preliminary time of 1:53.48 is over four seconds faster than his swim at last year's championship meet.
The final session of the 2013 A10 Swimming and Diving Championship gets under way tonight at 6:30 PM.
