VERONA, N.Y. - Freshman
Joe Markmann had an impressive start to his collegiate career, shooting a 73-76=149 (+5) to lead the La Salle golf team at the season opening Turning Stone-Tiger Intercollegiate, hosted by Missouri. The third and final round begins at 8 AM on Monday.
"It was great to be able to prove myself to a new team," Markmann said. "I knew I had the talent to be able to shoot well on this course. As long as I avoided big numbers and made my pars I was going to be fine."
As a team, the Explorers carded a 300-302=602 (+26) to stand in tenth place in the 14-team field. The Blue and Gold are 11 shots out of the top five.
"It's a really good start for us," head coach
Brad Kane said. "Comparing results to the past, this is a huge step forward. But our expectations are greater now so we want more."
Markmann is tied for 28th place, eight shots ahead of senior
Mike Johnson, who carded a 76-75=151 (+7)
"It's a great start for Joe," Kane said. "Those are solid numbers for a first tournament."
Junior
Matt Plummer, a transfer from Penn State Harrisburg playing in his first tournament as an Explorer, shot a 80-72=152 (+8) and is tied for 38th.
Sophomore
Justin Smith shot a 74-81=155 (+11) to tie for 46th and junior
Greg Goodreds is tied for 48th with a 77-79=156 (+12). Senior
Tyler Fewell competed as an individual, shooting 77-77=154 (+10) and is tied for 42nd with 18 holes to play.
Host Missouri holds a 17 shot lead after 36 holes after carding a 13-under 281-282=563. McNeese State is in second at +4, followed by Central Connecticut State (+6), Cleveland State (+12) and Connecticut (+15).
Cleveland State's Andrew Bailey blistered the course with a 66-70-136 (-8) and leads Missouri's Ryan Zech by two strokes.
