Golf Goes Low, In The Mix After 36 Holes At Rutgers Invitational


PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The La Salle golf team carded two rounds of 292 (+8) on Friday afternoon at the Rutgers Invitational and stands in seventh place (584, +16), 13 shots off the lead with one round to play on Saturday. A pair of golfers, sophomore Justin Smith and junior Greg Goodreds, shot collegiate lows in the opening round.

"We're really happy with how we played," head coach Brad Kane said. "Everyone had some positives today. Greg and Justin had personal bests, which was great to see. Tomorrow we want to move up into the top five."

Senior Mike Johnson was the top Explorer shooting a 73-71=144 (+2) and is in 14th place in the 90-player field. Smith recorded his even-par 71 in the morning and followed with a 74 for a 145 (+3). He is tied for 17th. Smith was even on the par fours today, the fifth best score by any player in the field. 

Goodreds was one back of Smith with his 72-74=146 (+4) and is tied for 22nd while junior Matt Plummer shot a 76-73=149 (+7) to stand in 35th place. 

Freshman Joe Markmann (77-76=153, +11) rounded out the lineup in 65th place. Senior Tyler Fewell competed as an individual, had a team-best seven birdies and is tied for 55th with his 74-78=152 (+10).

Host Rutgers leads the way with a two-round score of 571 (+3), two shots ahead of USC Upstate and Bethune Cookman. Hofstra (574, +6) and Adelphi (578, +10) round out the top five.

Jacob Stockl leads the field with a 70-68=138 (-4) by one stroke over Adelphi's Ryan Snouffer.

Play concludes tomorrow at 8 AM.
