FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior
Olivia Shoemaker drained two goals to lead the La Salle field hockey team at Fairfield on Sunday, but the Explorers could not hold off a second half blitz by the Stags in a 5-3 loss.
Junior
Maddy Tettelbach also recorded a three-point day with one goal and one assist while senior
Mariel Papa added two assists. Sophomore
Jenica Miller led the La Salle defense with two defensive saves.
Fairfield's Ann Burgoyne recorded a five-point outing with two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal and the insurance goal. Emily McCauley added two goals for the Stags.
The Explorers (1-5) got on the board fast when Papa found Shoemaker, who hit a goal from the center of the circle just 3:05 into the contest.
The Stags (4-2) responded quickly on McCauley's first goal of the game at the 5:40 mark.
The score was knotted at 1-1 for the next 25 minutes until Fairfield's Felicitas Heinen found the back of the cage off of a penalty corner to take a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Explorers took a 3-2 lead with back-to-back goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Tettelbach drained a goal at 40:12 when she tipped in a pass from
Olivia Leaman on the left side. Papa and Tettelbach set up a shot off of a penalty corner in the 49th minute, which Shoemaker converted for her second goal of the game.
The Fairfield offense turned up the pressure after that, and was able to convert two goals in a one minute span. McCauley scored her second of the game at 55:55 to tie the game at 3-3, and Burgoyne scored her first at 56:57 which proved the game winner. Burgoyne added an insurance goal at 62:22.

Lisa Shaffer took the loss in goal, recording six saves in the effort. Fairfield's Caitlin Bennett earned the win with five saves.
Fairfield held a 17-11 advantage in shots for the game, while the Explorers enjoyed a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Explorers return to action when they host Pacific on Friday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. at Drexel. They return to DeVincent Field on Sunday, Sept. 22, for a noon contest against Liberty.
