La Salle v. Morgan State Box (PDF)

BALTIMORE – La Salle (1-12) traveled to Baltimore, Md. Tuesday evening to take on the Morgan State Bears (3-7), dropping the match in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-21). Laura Kuhlmeier played an excellent match for the Explorers, notching 14 kills (.303), while Rachel Melich led the Explorers with 24 assists.

The Explorers entered the matchup looking to build on the progress they had made against Temple last Sunday. The Bears proved to be just a little too much for the Explorers, as they were able to edge them in three hotly competitive sets. The Explorers out-attacked (95-84) and out-dug (25-22) the Bears, but were not able to overcome the Bears sizeable advantages in hitting percentage (.274 - .116) and team blocks (7-0).

Laura Kuhlmeier continued to step-up in the absence of the Blue & Gold's leading hitter Kelly Perillo. Kuhlmeier racked up a season high 14 kills on an outstanding .303 hitting percentage. Ashley Felton proved a formidable presence in the middle of the Explorer attack, notching 7 kills on only 16 total attacks.

Junior setter Rachel Melich was in prime form, creating a multitude of plays for the Explorer attack. She finished the match with 24 assists, the fifth time she has surpassed the 20+ assist mark in a match this season. Melich also continued her excellent service play, registering a match-high 4 service aces.

Elena Lamping led all players with a match-high 8 digs.

The Explorers will be back in action this weekend, as they fly down to Tennessee for the Memphis Invitational. The Blue & Gold will faceoff against UALR at 3:00pm Friday, and will conclude tournament action on Saturday with tilts against tournament host Memphis at 1:00pm and Austin Peay at 4:00pm.
