Mariel Papa drained her fifth goal of the season just 7:16 into the contest, but Penn rattled off three straight to take control and eventually take a 3-2 decision over La Salle on Wednesday at Ellen Vagelos Field.
Papa found the back of the cage when she tipped on a rebound of a saved
Juliana Carfagno shot. The Quakers (5-1) then pushed hard but the Explorer defense held tight as it was peppered with 13 shots.
Penn broke through just before halftime when Emily Corcoran scored the first of her two goals in the game with a shot that deflected off a stick and into the cage. Corcoran then drained the game winner at the 45:56 mark.
Jasmine Cole notched the Quakers' third goal at 47:11, which proved to be the insurance goal.
The Explorers (2-7) cut the deficit to 3-2 at 68:41 when
Olivia Shoemaker drained her team-leading sixth goal of the season on a pass from
Maddy Tettelbach, but the team ran out of time to attempt a comeback.
Lisa Shaffer took the loss in goal, making 13 saves in the effort. Carly Sokach was in goal for the Quakers, stopping three shots in the game.
The Explorers return to DeVincent Field on Sunday (9/29) when they host Lehigh at 2 p.m.
