PHILADELPHIA - Several La Salle baseball players honed their skills on the diamond this summer, competing in some of the best amateur leagues on the east coast. Below is a list of four notable Explorers during the summer months.
Cape Cod Baseball League
Shawn O'Neill – Orleans Firebirds
O'Neill registered an impressive 24/5 strikeout/walk ratio in 43.1 innings of work this summer, pitching in the nation's premiere amateur summer league. The redshirt senior notched a 3.53 ERA, helping his squad reach the CCBL Finals. O'Neill won five ballgames for the Explorers this spring and fanned 40 batters in 63.1 innings.
Valley Baseball League
Adam Cherry – Harrisonburg Turks
Cherry tallied six saves this summer, fourth-most in the league behind a 3.64 ERA. The junior struck out 21 hitters in 17.1 innings (10.9 K/9) and walked only five. The Turks went 32-12 during the regular season, winning the league's south division. Cherry led the Explorer pitching staff in ERA this spring (2.23), earning three saves in relief.
Cameron Johnson – Strasburg Express
Johnson pounded VBL pitching this summer, posting a .296/.356/.481 slash line in 135 at bats. The Lackawanna transfer clobbered five homers, second-most on the summer circuit. Johnson finished second on the club in RBI (21) and played a large role in the Express' trip to the league's championship series. Johnson was named a NJCAA Division II First-Team All-American last season at Lackawanna, batting .377 with 15 homers and 71 RBI.
Ryan Welling – Strasburg Express
Welling pounded out 30 hits and tapped home 13 times this summer. The redshirt junior doubled 11 times and batted .292 in his team's playoff run. Welling hit three homers this spring for the Explorers, tied for most on the squad.
