Dolhansky's Overtime Heroics Push La Salle Past American, 3-2, On An Emotional Night

Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's soccer junior Anna Dolhansky netted her first two goals of the 2013 season in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winning overtime goal seventy minutes after she found the back of the net to put the Explorers on the board. In a match where La Salle outshot the Eagles of American University, 32-3, it took an extra frame for the Explorers to earn the 3-2 decision.

Junior goalkeeper Jessica Wiggins earned her second win of the season on a night dedicated to her sister, Megan, who suffered a stroke earlier this year.  Megan was named the Honorary Captain of the game and was recognized before the match by an entire La Salle squad outfitted in "Megan Strong" t-shirts.

The Explorers went ahead 1-0 when Dolhansky finished an excellent cross from teammate Kelsey Haycook just over 20 minutes into the match.  Dolhansky was streaking to the far post and slid to burry the laser sent in front of the net from Haycook.

Senior Renee Washington would record the game's next tally, sending a ball from Maryam Huseini past Eagle goalkeeper Charlene Belanger in the 27th minute to give La Salle the 2-0 lead.

Despite the Explorer's offensive dominance, the score remained locked at 2-0 for the majority of the second half thanks to the staunch defense of Belanger who finished the game with 11 saves.

At the 74-minute mark, the Eagles capitalized on a counter attack, drawing a La Salle foul and scoring off the restart.  Marley Jennings buried a shot in the box headed to her by teammate Michaela Cowgill.

Less than two minutes later, still riding the momentum shift, Lindsay Muri sent a shot just inside the far post from 25 yards out to tie the game for the Eagles.

La Salle would threaten repeatedly in the final fifteen minutes of regulation but were staved off by the heroics of Belanger and forced into overtime.

The Explorers made haste of the extra frame, scoring the golden goal less than thirty seconds into overtime.  Dolhansky ran down a pass deep to the corner from Huseini and sent it towards the goal, tucking it just below the crossbar and inside the far post to earn the victory.

La Salle returns to action on Sunday at McCarthy Stadium, looking to improve to 4-1-0 as they play host to the Thundering Herd of Marshall at 1 p.m.
