PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Fordham Rams in their Atlantic 10 opener at McCarthy Stadium on Friday night.
Fordham (4-6-1, 1-1) scored twice in the second half to outlast the Explorers (4-6-1, 0-1) after the two teams exchanged goals in the first five minutes of the opening half.
Andres Penfold broke the 1-1 tie in the 52
nd minute, fielding a cross from Kyle Bitterman at the top of the box and beating La Salle goalie
Mike Kirk to the lower left corner. Christopher Bazzini added an insurance goal for the Rams in the 81
st minute on an assist from Aleksander Mastilovic.
Fordham narrowly outshot the Explorers 13-12 in a physical matchup that saw 31 total fouls, including four yellow cards. The Explorers landed six of their shots on goal against Fordham keeper Sean Brailey, who made five saves.
The Explorers took a quick 1-0 lead in the 1st minute when
Greg Henry sent a cross from the near sideline into the box to
Joe Farrell, who beat the keeper inside the near post.
Fordham quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the 5th minute when Mike McNamara buried a cross from Andres Penfold just 4:49 into the game.
The Explorers will open a three-game road trip on Friday as they visit the George Washington Colonials.
