field hockey seniors 2014

Field Hockey | October 24, 2014

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle field hockey squad returns home this weekend for the final two home games of the 2014 season, as the Explorers host Massachusetts on Friday at 3pm and Bryant on Sunday at noon. The Explorers are one weekend away from a perfect home record, having gone 5-0 so far on DeVincent Field this year, and look to keep playoff hopes alive. The squad currently sits in fifth place in the A-10, with the top four making the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The program's annual Senior Day celebration is set for Sunday, with the program's three seniors - Colleen Kempf, Olivia Leaman and Maddy Tettelbach - honored in a pregame ceremony starting at approximately 11:45 am.

Scouting the Explorers...

The Explorers are just two games away from a perfect 7-0 home record this year as they upset Richmond and topped VCU in their last two home games three weeks ago. The squad went 2-2 in the last four games, all of which were on the road, including a 3-2 overtime win at Saint Louis and a 4-3 nonconference win at Missouri State.

Kempf provided the heroics against the Billikens, scoring with less than 18 minutes to go and then draining the game winner in overtime. She added a third goal of the weekend at Missouri State to lead all Explorers last weekend. Kendall Kreider added two goals to lead the team against Missouri State.

Kreider leads the squad in scoring with 13 points on six goals and one assist, and has scored the game winner three times to also lead the team in that category. With her three goals last weekend, Kempf catapulted to the number two spot on the team with a total of 11 points on five goals and one assist. Devin Muracco rounds out the top three with four goals and two assists for 10 points. Rookie Sophie Lozowski is the team leader with four assists while adding one goal this season.

Sophomore keeper Rachel Hartman currently sports an outstanding .811 save percentage, ranking her third nationally. She also ranks sixth nationally with 7.36 saves per game, and is recording a 1.68 goals against average.

Scouting the Minutewomen...

UMass, a perennial favorite in the Atlantic 10, has jumped out to a 5-1 league record despite struggling to a 3-7 nonconference record. However, three of those losses were to top-20 teams, including top-ranked Maryland, then-No. 13 Boston College and then-No. 5 Connecticut. The lone A-10 loss was a 1-0 setback to Richmond on Sept. 26. The Minutewomen snagged two wins last weekend, including a 4-0 romp over Davidson and a 2-1 overtime win against Boston University.

Like the Explorers, UMass also has a freshman leading in scoring. Three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Melanie Kreusch leads the team with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. A total of six Minutewomen have recorded at least 10 points this season, including Hailey Cockrum (5g; 5a; 15p), Izzie Delario (2g; 8a; 12p), Brooke Sabia (4g; 3a; 11p), Nicole Miller (5g; 0a; 10p), and Sarah Hawkshaw (4g; 2a; 10p). Cliodhna Loughlin has also contributed five assists.

Sam Carlino has handled the majority of goalkeeping duties, and is sporting a 1.61 GAA and .750 save percentage.

As a team, UMass has outscored opponents 31-26 overall and outscored A-10 opponents 17-6.

Scouting the Bulldogs...

Bryant enters the weekend with a 4-10 record, and is 1-2 in the MAAC. The Bulldogs split a pair of games last weekend, edging Siena 2-1 before dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker to Quinnipiac in a shootout after two overtime periods. Bryant also played fellow A-10 opponent Saint Louis this year, toppling the Billikens 5-0. The Bulldogs have three other common opponents, having topped UMass Lowell 2-1 and Holy Cross 3-1, and will play Rider next weekend.

The Explorers and Bulldogs met last season in Smithfield, with the Explorers taking the 1-0 win on an Olivia Leaman goal with just 2:22 remaining in regulation.

The Bulldog offense relies heavily upon Rosie Bird, who leads the team by far with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. She is one of just two players with double-digit points, the other being Victoria Danby with 11 points on two goals and a team-high seven assists. A trio of Bulldogs have seven points, including Erin Karcher who ranks second on the squad with five assists.

Senior Megan Hancock has handled most of the goalkeeping duties, and is recording a 1.86 GAA and .761 save percentage.

Next Up...

The Explorers wrap up the regular season on the road, with a contest at Saint Joseph's on Friday (10/31) at 3:30 pm and at Lehigh on Sunday (11/2) at 1 pm.
