PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore
Matt Robinson scored on a penalty kick in the 94
th minute to lift the La Salle men's soccer team (4-5-1) to a 1-0 victory over the LIU Blackbirds (1-8) at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
A foul by the Blackbirds in their own box at the 93:56 mark in the overtime period set the stage for Robinson, who fired the ball away from the keeper and into the lower right corner for his third goal of the season. The Landsdale, Pa. native also scored the game-winner in the victory over Stetson on September 21.
La Salle goalkeeper
Mike Kirk registered his third shutout on the season, all of which have come in the last four games. The junior made five saves in the win, including a diving save in the 93
rd minute of the overtime period.
La Salle landed seven of their 17 shots on goal for the afternoon, compared to five of 14 for Brooklyn. The Explorers had two goals waved off in the second half for being offside.
The Blue and Gold have won three straight games this season at McCarthy Stadium, following a draw with Temple in their home opener with wins over Stetson, Bucknell and LIU Brooklyn.
The Explorers open Atlantic 10 conference play on Friday when they host the Fordham Rams (3-5-1) at McCarthy Stadium at 7 p.m.
