NBCSN HighlightsBROOKLYN, N.Y. - Redshirt sophomore
Jordan Price scored 10 of his 20 points during a 13-1 run late in the second half to get the La Salle men's basketball team back in the game but the #8/7 Virginia Cavaliers proved too much to handle in a 64-56 UVa victory on Friday in the Barclays Center Classic. La Salle trailed by as many as 20 points with 13:16 to play before going on a 26-10 run to cut the deficit to just four with 1:12 to play.
"We obviously played an outstanding team," head coach
Dr. John Giannini said. "I think that the strength of our team and the weakness was one of the same. We really play with a lot of emotion. Anyone that can see our team play in the second half knows that we played tremendously hard and with a lot of pride. Anyone that was paying attention in the first half can see that we got very frustrated and at times I think we pulled apart a little bit."
Price had 15 of his 20 points after intermission and is averaging 22.3 ppg. in his last four contests. Junior
Khalid Lewis added nine points while senior
Steve Zack had eight points and seven boards.
Price had 12 straight points to start the La Salle comeback, getting the deficit to 53-43 with 6:41 left. Virginia ballooned the lead up to 13 points but La Salle kept chipping away. Two foul shots by senior
Jerrell Wright and another free throw by Price made it 58-54, Cavs, with 1:12 remaining. Unfortunately, La Salle would get no closer.
"We knew when we were down 20 that we were going to fight back and we kept hitting and hitting," Price said. "We made a run in the second half, but it wasn't enough."
Malcolm Brogdon had a career-high 20 points to lead UVa, while Anthony GIll added 16. Virginia improved to 6-0 with the win.Â
"When (La Salle) got in foul trouble they went with four guards and we started standing around," Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. "That was the first team that has done that to us. We exploited it a little bit, but then we had trouble. That is a credit to (La Salle Head Coach John Giannini) and those young men. They didn't lie down."
The 56 points that La Salle scored were the most allowed by Virginia this season.Â
"I think we also learned to use emotion as our strength and to make sure we minimize frustration and the times it can potentially hurt us," Giannini said. "I'm proud we gave ourselves a chance at the end against a really outstanding team."
La Salle (4-1) plays Vanderbilt on Saturday at 7 PM, whlie Virginia (6-0) moves on to play Rutgers in the championship game at 9:30 PM. Both games will air on NBC Sports Network.Â
