Women’s Soccer Set for Massachusetts in A-10 First Round

a 10

Women's Soccer | November 5, 2014

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team will face eighth-seeded Massachusetts to open the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday at 11 AM on Dayton's Baujan Field.

Scouting the Explorers (12-4-2, 8-0 A-10)
The Explorers completed a perfect 8-0 conference season over the weekend with 2-0 wins over Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. The Explorers earned their third regular season title in four years and will look to claim a third straight A-10 championship and fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Kristing Haugstad scored in the 45th minute against Duquesne on Friday to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead before senior forward Kelsey Haycook scored an insurance goal in the 66th and then scored both goals in Sunday's win over St. Bonaventure. Haycook garnered her fourth A-10 Player of the Week award of the season for her efforts.

Wednesday's release of postseason awards by the conference office was littered with Explorers. Haycook was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 18 goals and 39 points, while Kerri Aiken earned Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Paul Royal was dubbed Coach of the Year.

Joining Haycook and Aiken on the First Team were Maryam Huseini, Paige McDowell and Jessica Wiggins. McDowell and Haugstad were also named to the All-Rookie team.

Scouting the Minutewomen (5-8-5, 3-3-2 A-10)
The Minutewomen wrapped up the regular season on Sunday afternoon as they played to a scoreless draw on the road at Davidson.

UMass defender Rebekka Sverrisdóttir earned an Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team nod after helping the Minutewomen record six shutouts this season. Fellow junior Jackie Bruno leads the team in scoring with 12 points on six goals this season, including game-winning goals against New Hampshire, Saint Joseph's and Duquesne.

UM is playing in their sixth consecutive Atlantic 10 tournament, and is 11-10-1 all-time in 15 appearances. The Explorers edged UMass 1-0 in overtime in the semifinal round of last season's tournament on the way to their second consecutive A-10 tournament title.
