Johnson Paces Explorers At Rutherford Intercollegiate

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The La Salle golf team wrapped up its final tournament before next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State. Senior Mike Johnson shot a 76 (+5) in the final round to combine with his two 73s yesterday for a 54-hole total of 222 (+9). He tied for 29th.

Freshman Joe Markmann put together his second straight solid round with a 73 (+2) on Sunday. His line of 79-74-73=226 (+13) was good for a tie for 46th. Markmann had five birdies in the first seven holes before taking a triple-bogey on his eighth hole. He still shot 33 (-2) on the first nine. 

Junior Greg Goodreds shot a 75-77-79=231 (+18) to finish in a tie for 65th while senior Tyler Fewell (75-83-85=243, +30) placed 74th. Sophomore Justin Smith shot a 75-82-89=246 (+33) to finish 76th.

La Salle's three-round score of 298-306-313=917 (+65) was good for 13th in the field.

Minnesota (+8) won the event by 12 strokes over second place Seton Hall (+20). Connecticut and Rutgers were third at +24 followed by Maryland (+26).

The Golden Gophers also had the individual medalist. Jose Mendez was six-under with a 68-65-74=207, beating Seton Hall's Lloyd Jefferson Go by three strokes.

The Explorers will begin its quest for an Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday at TPC Tampa Bay.
