Explorers Garner Two Major Atlantic 10 Awards; Well-Represented On All-Atlantic 10 Squad

PHILADELPHIA - Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Candace Taglianetti Bossell and Rookie of the Year Toni Massetti highlight a total of seven Explorer honorees on this year's Atlantic 10 All-Conference lists. The squad also boasts two First Team picks, a Second Team honoree, three All-Rookie Team selections and a pair of All-Academic honorees, announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.

Caitlyn Brostrand earned her second All-Conference First Team award, and has now been on the A-10 postseason awards list all three years including her All-Rookie nod two years ago. Rookie keeper Gabby Antonelli joins her on the First Team and was also named to the All-Rookie squad.

Katelyn Fay picked up an All-Conference Second Team honor, marking the second year she earned a postseason award including her All-Rookie selection a year ago.

A trio of Explorers light up the All-Rookie Team, including Antonelli, Massetti and Allee Ilgenfritz.

Brostrand and Katie Marasco were named to the Academic All-Conference team based on a vote of the league's sports information directors.

Taglianetti Bossell and Massetti join Katie Ferris (UMass; Offensive Player of the Year), Taylor Blazer (Richmond; Defensive Player of the Year) and Amanda Kidder (Duquesne; Midfielder of the Year) as this year's Atlantic 10 major award winners.

Taglianetti Bossell earned her second Coach of the Year nod, the last coming in 2010 when the Explorers last qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship. She has now guided her squad to two Atlantic 10 tournaments, and oversaw the team set or match the program win record in each of the last three seasons. Her 2012 squad set the mark with 10, which was matched last season before this year's squad hit the 11-win mark for a new program standard. In her six years on the sidelines, she has now coached a total of 13 All-Conference selections, 10 All-Rookie picks and nine All-Academics.

"To be named coach of the year amongst coaches that I have a great deal of respect for is truly humbling," Taglianetti Bossell said. "So many of them have had terrific seasons and I am truly appreciative of this honor. I also believe you are only as strong as your staff, and I have amazing assistant coaches who help me to be better on a daily basis. So really this is a testament to all of our hard work!"

Massetti earned Rookie of the Year accolades on the heels of a highly successful freshman campaign. The attacker led all Atlantic 10 freshmen in points per game (2.00) while racking up 28 points on 24 goals and four assists. She was second among A-10 freshmen in total points, while playing in two and a half games less due to an injury sustained against Saint Joseph's. She was a three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week and drained two game-winning goals this season. She also recorded four hat tricks including a five-goal game to spark an 11-10 comeback win over Liberty during the nonconference season. She recorded eight multi-goal games, including seven of those in her final eight games of the season.

"We are so excited for Toni to earn Rookie of the Year. Her play in A10 games has really been huge for us and it's nice to see her get that recognition," Taglianetti Bossell said.

Brostrand earned her second straight All-Conference First Team nod after leading the team in points and/or goals for the third straight season. She is tied for the team lead in points with teammate Katelyn Fay with 40 points on 31 goals and a team-high nine assists. She has also led the team in draw controls the past two seasons, including a current mark of 24. She recorded 11 multi-goal games this season including a season-high five scores in the season opener against LIU Brooklyn, along with hat tricks against Temple, Drexel and George Washington. One of those goals against GW proved to be the game winner in overtime that clinched the playoff spot for the Explorers. Brostrand currently ranks eighth in school history with 112 career goals, eighth with 124 career points and tied for eighth with 58 draw controls.

Antonelli joins her on the All-Conference First Team, earning a spot on the top team in just her rookie season, as well as earning All-Rookie Team honors. The freshman standout goalkeeper is on track to record the best single-season goals against average in school history, as her current mark of 8.24 GAA is well ahead of the previous mark of 9.14 GAA set by Chantelle McCormick in 2005. She currently ranks first in the Atlantic 10 and fourth nationally with a punishing .500 save percentage, and has held opponents to a scant 31.1% (19-61) in free position shots this season. Antonelli is a two-time Atlantic 10 Defender of the Week, and earned both WomensLax.com National Rookie of the Week and ECAC Defender of the Week after a supreme performance in the Explorers' upset of Duquesne a few weeks ago.

"I am thrilled that Gabby and Caitlyn both earned First Team honors as they both have been impact players all season long," Taglianetti Bossell said.

Fay adds an All-Conference Second Team award to her young resume after earning the All-Rookie nod last season. She is tied with Brostrand for the team lead of 40 points while leading the Explorers with 32 goals and adding eight assists. She recorded seven hat tricks this season including two four-goal games. She scored four against then-No. 10 UMass and added four more in the Explorers' regular season finale win at George Mason. She scored three game-winning goals, including those at Delaware State, vs. California and at George Mason. She leads the Atlantic 10 this season with six free position goals in league play, and the sophomore needs just nine more goals to crack La Salle's all-time career top 10.

"Katelyn is truly our most consistent attacker and she always has the knack for stepping up when it matters," Taglianetti Bossell said. "She's just a great kid and I think this will really boost her confidence going into playoffs."

Joining Antonelli and Massetti on the All-Rookie Team is Ilgenfritz, who has really stepped up her game late in the season. She was named the WomensLax.com National Rookie of the Week and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week in the final week of the regular season after a seven-goal performance against GW and Mason. She drained three goals in the tournament-clinching win over the Colonials before finding the back of the net a season-high four times against the Patriots. Her 12 goals in Atlantic 10 play lead all A-10 freshmen, and she also recorded three hat tricks en route to 17 total goals in the regular season.

Rounding out the postseason awards are Brostrand and Marasco on the Academic All-Conference Team. To qualify for consideration, players must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be a starter or significant reserve. Brostrand, a Nursing major, earns the All-Academic nod for the second straight year while Marasco, a Management major, picked up her first career honor. Marasco, a defender who was moved to the midfield during the season, leads the Explorers with a career-high 16 caused turnovers and helped the defense limit opponents to 8.31 goals per game.

The Explorers are set for Atlantic 10 Championship play, as they open the tournament against second-seeded Richmond in the semifinal round at 1 p.m. on Friday.
