Explorers Stumble in Conference Opener

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA-
La Salle volleyball (6-11, 0-1 A-10) lost their conference opener 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 15-25) to Saint Louis (11-4, 1-0 A-10) Friday evening at Tom Gola Arena. Freshman Bryanna Davis led the Explorers with eight digs and added five attacks in the losing effort.

Early in set one, La Salle was able to keep pace with the Billikans, but late in the set Saint Louis picked up steam, and were simply too much to handle. Freshman Rachel Carr towered above the net with a solo block to notch things up at 4-4 in the early going. However, an eight point run from Saint Louis gave them a lead that they wouldn't give up on their way to a 25-11 set win. Junior Laura Kuhlmeier had three of the six La Salle kills in set one.

Set two saw Saint Louis jump out to an early lead and La Salle not have quite enough to completely cut into their lead from there. Despite being down 23-14, La Salle grabbed three points back and made it a 24-17 lead before the Billikans were able to put the match away. A Bryanna Davis kill helped to cut into the lead. Davis led the Explorers with three kills on just seven swings in the second set, while junior Erin Noga added four digs.

The Bilikans were able to close out the match in set three, taking it 25-15. Junior Kelly Perillo, Bryanna Davis, and sophomore Phoebe Cook all finished the set with two kills apiece. Michelle Healy added in six assists and two digs in the deciding set.

Kelly Perillo paced the Explorers with six kills on the day. La Salle was only able to muster two service aces on the day with Healy and senior Jennifer Whelan each adding one.

The Explorers have a quick turnaround as they host Dayton tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena.
