PHILADELPHIA-The La Salle swim team returns to action on Wednesday evening as they welcome Villanova to Kirk Pool for a dual meet which gets underway at 5 p.m. They continue the week as they head to Drexel on Friday for the first road meet of the season.
The meet will kick off the season for the Explorers men's team while the women opened their season last weekend when they faced off against James Madison. This will be the first action of the season for the Wildcats.
The men's team is coming off a season that saw them finish in fourth place with 449.5 points at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The team brings back four different upperclassmen who medaled at last year's A-10 Championships.
Senior
Johan Roth set an Atlantic 10 record with his winning time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:57.12. He also narrowly missed reaching the top of the podium again in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 54.96 time.
Juniors
Cameron Fadley and
Mattias Glenesk also return after second place finishes last season. Fadley finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.92, just .06 seconds off the winning time in the event. Glenesk finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle thanks to his time of 15:15.17.
Senior
CJ Gimpel is coming off a season that saw him finish third in the 1-meter diving. He tallied 269.60 points in the event to earn the bronze medal. The Explorers finished second in the 400-yard medley relay last season as well thanks to a 3:16.29 time as a team.
The women's team is coming off a strong start to the year against James Madison. Freshman
Olivia DiStefano was named Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Week after finishing third in the 50-yard freestyle with a top-10 time on the year and a 100-yard backstroke time that was the top time in the A-10 this year.
Villanova is coming off a season which their women's team won the Big East title for the second consecutive year thanks to accumulating 957.5 points. The Wildcat women won 14 of 18 events and broke five program records at the meet.
Following the meet with Villanova the Explorers hit the road for the first time this year as they head to Drexel to take on the Dragons at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Dragon men finished fourth at last year's CAA Championships while the women finished eighth.
