Women’s Soccer Tops Richmond, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team defeated the Richmond Spiders 2-0 in Atlantic 10 action on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.

"Our girls stepped up," said head coach Paul Royal. "It was a tough week after that loss on Sunday, and to see our kids rebound is huge for us."

Junior Deja Davis netted her third goal of the season to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, striking a pass from Kristin Haugstad just outside the box and sending it high inside the far post. Davis also assisted Marcela Robinson's goal in the 88th minute.

"We needed this win for a momentum boost going into A-10's", said Davis. "This was really good for our momentum and our morale for the next game."

Robinson scored her first career goal on a header in the 88th minute to give La Salle a two-goal advantage and put the Spiders out of reach. Hunter Filippo reached the box in the air on a throw-in, which Davis headed towards the far post to set up Robinson's finish.

Redshirt sophomore Larisa Zambelli made her third start of the season between the pipes for the Blue & Gold, tallying her first career shutout with one save against seven shots. The La Salle back line didn't allow Richmond to take a single corner kick.

"A lot of it started with our defense, from Larisa all the way up," added Royal. "Our organization was great, our pressure was great."

The Explorers are on the road for the next two games, visiting Saint Louis on Sunday and George Mason next Thursday.
