Volleyball Falls at VCU


RICHMOND, Va.- The La Salle volleyball team dropped a nail-biting 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 17-25, 25-22, 12-15) match at VCU on Friday evening.
 
Junior Ashley Felton posted a team-high 14 kills on the evening while sophomore Hannah McGary hit .364 with five kills on the evening to finish with a match-high hitting percentage.
 
The Explorers jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a 25-23 set one win. Despite trailing by as many as seven early in the frame, La Salle battled back and took a 16-15 lead after scoring seven straight points. The run was fueled by two service aces from freshman Madison Kuch and a kill from Davis. The freshman from Oakland later sealed the set with a final kill, one of four in the frame on just six swings for a .500 hitting percentage in the set.
 
The Rams battled back and grabbed sets two and three by score lines of 25-19 and 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead over the Explorers. Felton had four kills in the second frame while sophomore Hannah McGary paced La Salle with a pair of kills on just thee swings in the third set. Freshman Jensen Sharrits had eight of her 15 digs on the evening in the second and third sets.
 
La Salle (6-19, 0-8 A-10) battled back and evened things up by taking set four, 25-22, to force a decisive set five. The Explorers opened up a six point lead midway through the set, and despite the hosts closing the gap to just one late, La Salle closed out the set.  Felton led the way with four kills in the frame.
 
VCU (9-14, 3-5 A-10) was able to close out the match by taking set five 15-12 over La Salle. The Rams jumped out to an 8-3 lead thanks to seven straight points. The Explorers close the gap to just two at 12-10 following a Kuch service ace, but it wasn't enough as the Rams were able to close out the match. Felton again paced the Explores with three kills in the frame.
 
Freshman Taylor Hite finished the day with a double-double of 38 assists to go with ten digs. She was joined in double-figure digs by Sharrits, and seniors Michelle Healy and Kelly Perillo who also added seven kills on the evening.
 
La Salle returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Davidson for a 1 p.m. first serve.
