Late La Salle Comeback Falls Short Against North Texas, 69-63

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team couldn't complete a late comeback against North Texas on Wednesday night, falling 69-63 to the Mean Green at Tom Gola Arena.

La Salle's Amy Griffin had a career-high 26 points, going 7-for-17 from the field and 10-for-12 from the foul line. Griffin and Jasmine Alston both grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

A Kelsey Criner three-point play put North Texas in front 63-56 with 1:54 to go before the Explorers scored five unanswered points to make it a 63-61 game on an Iyonna Crenshaw free throw with 1:05 left. Griffin started the run with a foul shot and added a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.

Acheil Tac drew a foul following the Crenshaw free throw with 38 seconds left and hit both shots to push the North Texas lead back to four points.  Two free throws from Griffin on La Salle's next trip down the court again cut the deficit to two points, at 65-63 with 28 seconds left, before the Mean Green scored the game's final four points.

La Salle ran into foul trouble in the second half, sending the Mean Green to the line a total of 25 times following the break. Tac hit 11-of-12 from the charity stripe on the way to a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Micahya Owens picked up a career-high seven steals to pair with 16 points. Alston added a game-high six assists and six points in 40 minutes.

The Explorers host the Villanova Wildcats in Big 5 action from Tom Gola Arena on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
