PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team fell to the Villanova Wildcats 67-56 in Big 5 action from Tom Gola Arena on Sunday afternoon.
La Salle sophomore
Amy Griffin finished with a game-high 23 points, going 10-for-20 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line. The sophomore pulled down seven rebounds and dished two assists.
The Explorers cut the Villanova lead to 35-32 on free throws from
Jasmine Alston with 6:24 left in the 3rd quarter but couldn't find the equalizer before the Wildcats closed the quarter on a 12-2 run. Villanova scored the first three points of the 4th quarter to extend their lead to 16 and push the game out of reach.
Alex Louin led the Wildcats with 18 points while Caroline Coyer had 14 points and Jordan Dillard finished with 11.
Junior
Jasmine Alston registered a double-double, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds to go with 10 points.
Adreana Miller and
Deja Bullock both had eight points.
Villanova scored the game's first 12 points before La Salle closed the first quarter on a 10-3 run. The Explorers eventually cut their deficit to two points on Griffin's jumper with 1:20 left in the 2nd quarter and trailed by four at the break.
The Explorers are back in action later this month in the Hawk Holiday Classic hosted by Monmouth. The Explorers play Norfolk State on Dec. 29 and either Monmouth or St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 30.
