Lacrosse Routs Delaware State, 19-4

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle lacrosse squad was on fire with 14 first half goals, en route to a 19-4 win over Delaware State on Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.

Katelyn Fay led the attack with a career-high-tying five goals and career-high-tying six points as she added one assist to her stat line. Erin McCabe recorded a hat trick with three goals and one assist, and Caitlyn Brostrand added four points on two goals and two assists.

The rest of the Explorer (3-3) offense was truly balanced, with nine more players scoring a goal each. Kendall Lupinek, Abbey Meehan and Kerry Newby each scored their first collegiate goals tonight. Claire Andrews, Brittany Edwards, Kelly Furman, Allee Ilgenfritz, Courtney Woolford and Katie Wherley also notched a goal apiece.

Four different players scored for the visiting Hornets (0-7), who got two goals in each half.

"We had great energy from the first whistle to the last and it was exciting to see many players score their first collegiate goal," Head Coach Candace Taglianetti Bossell said. "We capitalized on some great fast breaks and turnovers in the ride. We still have a lot of areas that need work and this game served as an opportunity for us to develop our identity."

The Explorers ran out to a 7-0 lead in the first 17:06 of the game behind three Fay goals and both of Brostrand's goals. DSU's Kayla Yurkanin got the visitors on the board with 11:17 left in the first half, but the Explorers rattled off six more. Fay drained two more to bring her to five and McCabe drained two more for her total three.

DSU's Lauren Perry scored with 41 seconds until halftime, but Woolford got that one back with a score with just three seconds on the clock when she took a pass from Alanna Diffendal. Diffendal finished the night with three helpers.

The Explorers extended their 14-2 halftime lead to 19-2 with goals from five different goal scorers. DSU scored the final two goals of the game with 2:24 left and 41 seconds left.

The Explorers outshot the Hornets 38-13 and dominated the draw controls, 17-8, with Brostrand getting controlling a team-high four draws. They also picked up 22 ground balls to DSU's 14. They recorded 14 caused turnovers, with two each from Andrews, Newby, Anastasia Fries, Danielle Strang and Gabby Antonelli.

Antonelli and Lucy Loughlin split the game in goal. Antonelli played the first half to earn the win, making four saves. Loughlin got the nod for the second half and recorded three saves. DSU's Rhian Sellers made 12 saves on the night while taking the loss in goal.

The squad returns to action on Saturday, March 21, when Sacred Heart visits McCarthy Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.
