Huge Second Half Lifts Lacrosse To 15-5 Win Over Sacred Heart

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle lacrosse squad strung together nine straight goals spanning the majority of the second half to break wide open a 6-4 score en route to a 15-5 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

Caitlyn Brostrand and Katelyn Fay paced the Explorers (4-3) with four goals each. Brostrand added an assist for a game-high five points. Allee Ilgenfritz added four points, all on assists. Claire Andrews and Kelly Furman added two goals and an assist each, and Katie Fonte drained two goals. Anna Kelly also scored her first goal of the season to round out the scoring.

Caitlin Delaney scored twice for the Pioneers (2-5) to lead the visitors.

The two squads were all about the defense in the early going as neither squad found the back of the net for the first 16:33. Fay opened scoring with a woman-up goal on an Andrews assist at 13:27. Fay added a second goal at 8:59 on a Furman assist. Kelly found herself in a one-on-one with no one else around and took the opportunity to drain her first of the season just 27 seconds after Fay's second goal.

Delaney got the Pioneers on the board at 5:41 and Jesslyn Joseph cut the Explorer lead to 3-2 at 3:35. Brostrand scored her first of the game at 1:46, but SHU's Emily Corrice got it back with a goal just six seconds until halftime for a 4-3 halftime score.

The Explorers wasted no time after the break as Brostrand scored her second goal of the game just 28 seconds into the second half. She then found Fay for a score with 26:00 on the clock to put the Explorers up 6-3.

Erin Coutts hit an unassisted shot one minute later to cut the Explorer lead to 6-4.

Neither squad scored again for another seven minutes, but Brostrand's goal at 17:52 opened the floodgates. Furman and Andrews added back-to-back goals at 16:34 and 14:26 to put the Explorers up 9-4.

The Pioneer defense held for just shy of seven more minutes, but the Explorers scored four more in a 5:15 span for a 15-4 lead with 2:22 on the clock.

Delaney wrapped up the scoring with a goal with 55 seconds remaining for the final 15-5 score.

The Explorer offense was relentless, outshooting the Pioneers 41-12 with a 31-9 shot-on-goal advantage. The Explorers also picked up 27 ground balls to 11 for the Pioneers and dominated on draw controls, 15-8.

Gabby Antonelli needed just three saves to earn the win in goal. Lucy Loughlin also saw a few minutes of action, making a terrific save on a free position shot. SHU's Kelly Keenan was strong for the Pioneers, making 16 saves while suffering the loss.

The Explorers wrap up nonconference play at Drexel on Wednesday (3/25) before opening Atlantic 10 play next Sunday (3/29) when they host George Washington at 3 p.m.
