BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Davidson's Tyler Kalinoski threw up a left-handed lay-up that dropped through the net as time expired to lift the #1-seeded and nationally-ranked Wildcats over La Salle, 67-66, in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals on Friday at the Barclays Center. The Explorers were led by their senior class, which combined for 54 of the team's 66 points.
"That's one of the better games I've ever been involved with," head coach
Dr. John Giannini said. "Both teams deserved to win. I was surprised that shot went in. I thought that we had them out of rhythm a little bit and it looked like the ball was thrown towards the rim and not shot as well as they normally do, and it just kind of took a couple bounces and went in. "
Senior
Steve Zack had a career-high 24 points on 11-for-17 shooting and added 15 rebounds.
Jerrell Wright had 19 points while
D.J. Peterson had a season-high 11 points and a career-best nine rebounds.
Â
The senior class did everything they could to extend the season by one more day. But in the end it was another senior who helped his team move on to the A-10 Semifinals.
"Our seniors were absolutely amazing," Giannini said. "The stats show that. Your eyes could have seen it. They played with incredible effort and pride and togetherness, and they displayed everything that a coach appreciates and admires. Of course, they have been great all four years. I can't say enough about them or our effort or the effort of both teams."
La Salle had possession in the final minute and even collected an offensive rebound to take even more clock off while holding a 66-65 lead.
Jordan Price missed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left, giving Davidson the ball with a chance for the win.
Â
Kalinoski got to the basket and his shot narrowly missed the outstretched arm of Wright before bouncing around the rim before falling.
Â
The Blue and Gold led for all but 1:18, which made the ending a tough pill to swallow. The lead ballooned to 18 points in the first half and was a nine-point La Salle lead with 4:45 to play.
Â
But the A-10's regular season champions wouldn't go away. They out scored the Explorers 10-0 over the final 4:45, with Kalinoski accounting for seven of the points.
Â
La Salle used its height advantage to get the ball to Zack and Wright as much as possible. The two shot 19-for-26 from the field on their way to a combined 43 points and 21 rebounds. The Explorers outscored Davidson, 40-20, in the paint.
Â
Jack Gibbs led Davidson with 22 points and six assists, while Kalinoski, the A-10 Player of the Year, added 18. Â
Â
The Explorers end their season with a 17-16 record. Davidson (24-6) advances to play VCU in the A-10 Semifinals on Saturday.Â
