PHILADELPHIA – La Salle's
Michael Flax drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 8
th inning as the Explorers earned a 5-4 win
over Dayton to clinch the series on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
Derek Prucnall scored the winning run for the Explorers, tagging up on Flax's fly ball to left with nobody out in the 8
th. The run gave the Explorers their first lead of the game after Dayton jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.
Ryan Welling started the 8
th inning with his third double of afternoon, and scored the game-tying run when the UD third baseman threw the ball away trying to record an out on Prucnall's sacrifice bunt.
Adam Cherry (S, 4) retired the Flyers in order in the 9th to earn the save.
Tom Fazzini (W, 1-2) stranded a runner in scoring position after entering with two men on and one out in the 7
th, and pitched a perfect 8
th inning to keep La Salle within reach.
La Salle loaded the bases with two outs in the 7th for
Mark Williams, who drilled a two-run double to left center to cut Dayton's lead to 4-3.
UD took a 4-0 lead with four runs on three hits in the 2
nd inning before La Salle got a run back in the home half of the 2
nd.
Josh Savakinus started the inning with a triple to center and scored on Welling's first double.
La Salle is on the road next weekend as they visit Morehead State for a three-game series beginning on Friday with a doubleheader.
