MALVERN, Pa. - The La Salle golf team recorded its best score of the season (292, +8) on Tuesday to finish sixth out of 16 teams at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Villanova at White Manor Country Club. The score was the best since a 285 (-3) at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship and the 36-hole score of 595 (+25) was just three strokes out of third place.
"I can't say enough about the effort the last two days," head coach
Brad Kane said. "We were a little down after last week at William and Mary so this was a great way to bounce back. P.J. found his confidence in his putter today and Tonny really struck the ball fantastic. I was really happy to see Joe go low today after a rough start to the spring season. This gives us a great shot of confidence going into Liberty next weekend."
Sophomore P.J. Acierno tied his season low with a one-under 70 on Tuesday. He had four birdies on the day and played the final eight holes at two-under. His 75-70=145 (+3) was good for a tie for eighth in the 95-player field.
Graduate student
Tonny Aizpun had his best round as an Explorer with a even-par 71. He parred the first 12 holes before a birdie on 13 got him into the red numbers. Aizpun shot 76-71=147 (+5) to tie for 14th.
Senior
Greg Goodreds had three birdies on Tuesday in his 78 (+7). He shot a 72 yesterday for a eight-over 150 to finish 24th.
Sophomore
Joe Markmann shot a 73 (+2) on Tuesday in a steady round that included 14 pars and a birdie. He shot 79-73=152 (+10) to tie for 40th.
Senior
Justin Smith shot a 78-84=162 (+20) and tied for 80th.
Binghamton (581, +13) edged Delaware (+16) by three strokes to take the team title. Drexel, Saint Joseph's and Lehigh all tied at +23.
Lehigh's Billy Johns blistered the course with a four-under 67 on Tuesday and finished at two-under for the tournament.
La Salle is off next weekend before heading to the Liberty Invitational on April 10-11.
