ASHEVILLE, N.C.- Redshirt senior
Ryan Welling had career-highs with five hits and six RBI's as the La Salle baseball team scored in seven straight innings on their way to a 16-5 rout of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Friday at Greenwood Field.
Welling finished the day 5-for-6 with six RBI's after a two-run double in the 5
th and a grand slam to cap a five-run 9
th for the Blue and Gold. Welling also doubled in the 2
nd, and singled in the 7
th and 9
th.
La Salle rallied from a 2-0 deficit by scoring in the final seven innings, including eight runs over the final two innings, beginning with an RBI single from
Josh Savakinus in the 3
rd to cut Asheville's lead to 2-1.
Joey Ravert hit a two-run homer in the 3
rd to give the Explorers a 3-2 lead before Welling's two-run double. Ravert also scored on a wild pitch in the 5
th.
Savakinus scored on a wild pitch in the 6
th and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run in the 7
th to put the Explorers in front 8-3.
Cameron Johnson,
Mark Williams and Ravert hit back-to-back homers to start the 8th inning. The Explorers posted three runs in the 8
th and five in the 9
th to outscore the Bulldogs 8-2 over the final two innings.
Welling's six hits led the way for La Salle while Ravert,
Mark Williams and
Michael Flax all had three hits each. The Explorers also knocked five homers.
