PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team handled the St. Bonaventure Bonnies 17-6 on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field to clinch the three-game series.
The Explorers exploded for 10 runs in the 3
rd, capped by a
Ryan Welling grand slam, to put the game out of contention in the early innings. Welling also singled in a pair in the 1
st to finish 2-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBI's.
Collin McGowan and
Joey Ravert also had big days for the Blue and Gold as the pair combined for six hits and six RBI's. McGowan finished 4-for-5 with three RBI's while Ravert went 2-for-3 with three runs driven in.
After Welling's two-run single in the 1
st, McGowan laid down a squeeze bunt to bring home
Travis George and
Cameron Johnson plated
Michael Flax with a sacrifice fly to make the lead 4-0.
La Salle had six hits in the 10-run 3
rd, and added another run in the 4
th on a Ravert RBI single to put the Explorers in front 15-0.
La Salle starter
Mark Williams (W, 2-0) struck out five Bonnies in six innings of work, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk. In contrast, SBU starter Ben Contento (L, 0-1) lasted just 1.1 innings, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks.
The Explorers are back at Hank DeVincent Field on Tuesday as they host Delaware State at 3 p.m.
