Men's Novice Eight, Women's Varsity Four Lead Explorers at Kerr Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle rowing teams were back on the river this weekend, this time on familiar waters at the annual Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River. The men's novice eight and the women's varsity four boats led the Explorers as both crews advanced to their respective event finals.

The women's varsity four placed fourth in the final, defeating fellow Atlantic 10 boat Fordham as well as Marist. The Explorers finished in 8:20.94, outlasting the Rams by over six seconds (8:27.23) and the Red Foxes by over 24 seconds (8:44.99). Lafayette won the event with the lone sub-eight minute time (7:54.86), followed by Temple 'A' (8:01.19) and Drexel 'A' (8:09.40).

The Explorers advanced to the final via a second place finish in Heat 2, as the top two boats in each of the three heats moved on. The Explorers were less than five seconds off of the Drexel 'A' boat time (7:52.99) with a time of 7:57.57. Richmond (8:03.81), Fairfield 'B' (8:04.30) and NY Maritime (8:36.56) rounded out the last three finishers in the heat.

The V4 was coxed by Katie Reyes, and rowed by Katie Van Stone (4), Brooke Spence (3), Savannah Fader (2) and Amanda Ryan (bow).

The men's novice eight finished fifth in the final with a time of 6:31.89, defeating Marist by over 20 seconds. Two Drexel boats took the top spots, with the Dragons' 'A' boat winning in 6:09.30 and the 'B' boat in 6:23.17. Lehigh (6:26.23) and Bucknell (6:27.50) finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Explorers advanced to the final by way of a third place finish in Heat 2, as the top three boats in both heats moved on. The Explorers clocked a 6:21.83 in the heat round to defeat NY Maritime and Lafayette by over 30 seconds and nearly a minute, respectively. Drexel 'A' won the heat in 6:08.26 followed by Lehigh (6:20.89).

The novice eight boat was coxed by Grant Maddock, and rowed by Kieran Hughes (stroke), Jake Fabel (7), Brendan Mason (6), Zach LaBarth (5), Kenny Roller (4), Kyle Adams (3), Jeff Waldin (2) and Josh Brooks (bow).

The two varsity eight boats were also in action. On the men's side, the Explorers finished fourth in the petite final with a time of 7:05.58, less than three seconds off of third place Franklin & Marshall (7:01.87). Rochester won the petite final in 6:37.02 and Fairfield was second in 6:39.78. The men's V8 finished fifth in Heat 1, just barely off of F&M again with a time of 6:32.78 to F&M's 6:32.21. Bucknell (6:02.54), George Mason (6:11.81) and Villanova (6:16.73) advanced to the grand final with top three finishes in the heat round. 

The men's V8 was coxed by Angelie Itaas, and rowed by Jack Schall (stroke), Matt Cardin (7), Marqus Brown (6), Kevin Sullivan (5), Mike Gormley (4), Nick McGloin (3) Sean McGettigan (2) and Waleed Omar (bow).

The women's V8 finished fifth in the petite final with a time of 8:33.89. Rochester won the petite final in 7:23.44, followed by Fairfield (7:25.65), Philadelphia U (7:27.91) and Marist (7:34.57). The Explorers moved on to the petite final by way of a sixth place finish in Heat 2, where they clocked a 7:46.94. Drexel (6:44.40), Fordham (6:47.75) and Lehigh (6:54.90) advanced to the grand final with top three finishes; Rochester (6:58.94), Fairfield (7:04.33) and the Explorers went to the petite final.

The women's V8 was coxed by Emily Giegerich, and rowed by Maura McKenna (stroke), Sofia Iaconelli (7), Erika Gonzalez (6), Gianna Harris-Campbell (5), Emily Finkbinder (4), Emma Merrick (3), Jackie Gonzalez (2) and Cora Jones (bow).

The men's team also entered a varsity pair for the first time this season. McGloin and Stephens paired up to row a 9:12.86 for fourth in Heat 2. Colgate 'A' won the heat and advanced to the final with a 7:32.57, followed by Drexel 'C' (7:45.03) and NYU (8:26.68).

The Explorers return to the Schuylkill River again this Saturday for the annual Bergen Cup.
