HARMONY, Fla. - It was a weekend to remember for La Salle graduate student
Tonny Aizpun. The Barcelona, Spain native finished third at the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, the best finish by an Explorer, and set the program's 54-hole record with a 68-71-71=210 (-6) to be named to the All-Atlantic 10 team.
Competing in his first A-10 Championship for the Blue and Gold after transferring from Mount St. Mary's, Aizpun dominated the par fives, going nine-under on those 12 holes. He had 15 total birdies to rank third in the field.
He is the second Explorer to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors, joining
Mike Johnson who was named to the team last spring. The previous 54-hole school record was set earlier this season by sophomore
PJ Acierno, who shot a 215 (+2) at the Rutgers Invitational. Aizpun also tied the school record for an 18-hole round on Friday with his 68 (-4).Â
The previous best finish at A-10s was also set by Johnson, who placed seventh at the 2012 championship.Â
His round on Sunday was remarkably consistent, with 15 pars, 2 birdies and a bogey. He finished one shot behind Richmond's Matthew Low (-7) and eight shots back of the medalist, VCU's Adam Ball.Â
"Tonny hit the ball great all day but just couldn't get the putts to fall," head coach
Brad Kane said. "I'm so proud of how he handled himself this week and constantly stayed dialed in. He wanted to do well and delivered. It was a great performance."
Acierno was the next highest Explorer finisher with his 70-79-77=226 (+10) to tie for 37th.
Seniors
Greg Goodreds and
Justin Smith posted their best rounds of the championship on Sunday. Goodreds shot a 77-85-76=238 (+22) while Smith had a 84-80-77=241 (+25).
Sophomore
Joe Markmann rounded out the lineup with a 85-90-77=252 (+36).
"We finished the year on a high note," Kane continued. "All the guys played pretty well and Greg and Justin closed out their careers with their best rounds of the tournament."
The Explorers shot a team score of 299-315-301=915 (+51) to place 11th.
VCU won the Atlantic 10 Championship at 10-under, 13 shots better than second place Richmond (+3). Davidson was third at +5.Â
