KINGSTON, R.I.- Freshman Chase Arnold delivered a three-run double in the top of the 10th to give La Salle a 7-6 win over Rhode Island in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Arnold, who pinch hit for second baseman Michael Flax, put the exclamation point on a two-out Explorer rally that broke a 4-4 tie. Two-out singles by Ethan Springston and Derek Prucnal preceded a Travis George walked to load the bases and set up Arnold's game-winner.
Rhody didn't go down quietly in the home half of the 10th, scoring twice to cut the lead to 7-6 before Tom Fazzini (S, 1) induced a strikeout to end the game with the tying run on third. Adam Cherry (W, 2-1) recorded the last two outs in the 8th and worked a perfect 9th before running into trouble in the 10th.
Josh Savakinus finished 3-for-5 with a homer and a double, which moved the senior within one double of the single season record (23) set by Mike Fuchs in 1999. Prucnal, Mark Williams, and Cameron Johnson each had two hits as the Explorers collected 11 hits in the game.
Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd before the Explorers answered with two runs in the 4th and two more in the 5th to take a 4-1 lead.
Johnson doubled in two runs in the 4th to give the Explorers their first lead at 2-1. Savakinus homered and Williams scored on a URI fielding error in the 5th to stretch the lead to three.
The Explorers continue their push for the A-10 tournament in game two on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
