MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's Hawks scored twice in the 9
th inning to take a 5-4 win over La Salle on Sunday afternoon at Smithson Field.
After two strikeouts to start the 9
th, the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs against reliever
Adam Cherry (L, 1-1). An errant throw from
Collin McGowan on Deon Stafford's grounder to short brought in the tying and winning runs.
Nico Olvera went 4-for-4 as La Salle outhit the Hawks 10-8 on the afternoon.
Joey Ravert went 2-for-5 with a homer as the pair combined to drive in all of La Salle's runs.
After the Hawks got a run in the 1
st, La Salle scored in the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead. Olvera got things going with a two-out RBI single in the 2
nd, and Ravert's RBI single in the 3
rd gave the visitors the lead.
Olvera extended the lead to 3-1 on a RBI single in the 4
th before Ravert knocked a solo homer in the 7
th. The Hawks got a run back in the home half of the 7
th to set up the walk-off win in the 9th.
The Explorers return home to host the George Mason Patriots for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
