Men's Novice Four Leads Explorers At Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - The men's novice four boat won its heat to advance to Saturday morning's semifinals and lead the La Salle rowing team at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The F/N4+ concluded its season with a fourth place finish in the semifinal. The Explorers clocked a 7:01.231 in the semifinal, beating both Penn State (7:08.606) and Purdue (7:15.570). Bowdoin (6:46.502) and Drexel (6:47.724) move on to the final via their first and second place finishes, and Michigan rounded out the top three with a 6:59.175.

The novices earned a spot in the semifinal after winning their heat by nearly five seconds. The boat clocked a 7:22.649, just shy of five seconds ahead of second-place Grand Valley State (7:27.589). Clarkson (7:39.464), Wentworth Institute (7:40.360) and SUNY Geneseo (7:57.499) rounded out the 3-4-5 spots.

The F/N4+ included coxswain Braxton Thorn, and rowers Kenny Roller (stroke), Kyle Adams (3), Waleed Omar (2) and Josh Brooks (bow).

The varsity four and varsity eight boats also competed on Friday. The V4 clocked a 7:35.132 to finish fourth in its race, edging NC State (7:36.698) by just over a second. Drexel (6:55.712), Ohio State (7:00.141) and Marquette (7:05.132) were the top three, with Drexel and Ohio State moving on to the quarterfinal round.

The V4 included coxswain Angelie Itaas, and rowers Sean McGettigan (stroke), Jeff Waldin (3), Mike Gormley (2) and Antonio Stephens (bow).

The V8 finished third in its heat, just one spot shy of advancing to the semifinal round. The Explorers crossed the finish line in 6:26.810 with a wide margin over fourth place Binghamton (6:49.750). The Explorers moved into reps with the third place finish, and Temple (5:55.940) and Delaware (5:59.270) advanced to semis with top two finishes.

The V8 finished fifth in its rep with a 6:33.930. Villanova won the race in 6:25.023, followed by Marietta (6:27.090), Fairfield (6:31.043) and Rochester (6:33.378).

The V8 included coxswain Grant Maddock, and rowers Kieran Hughes (stroke), Jake Fabel (7), Brendan Mason (6), Zach LaBarth (5), Matt Cardin (4), Marqus Brown (3), Kevin Sullivan (2) and Jack Schall (bow).

The Explorers wrapped up the 2014-15 season with the conclusion of Dad Vail races.
