AUSTIN, Texas – La Salle graduate student
Ryan Welling has been named a CoSIDA/Capital One Third Team Academic All-American, it was announced today.
"La Salle baseball is honored to have had
Ryan Welling be a member of our program," said head coach
Mike Lake. "There's nobody more deserving than Ryan after all the hard work he put in on the field and in the classroom."
Welling earns the All-America nod after securing Academic All-Atlantic 10 and Academic All-District honors last month, as well as Big 5 Student-Athlete of the Year earlier this week. The redshirt senior amassed a 3.83 GPA in accounting & finance as an undergraduate and has a 3.73 GPA in La Salle's MBA program.
The Baltimore, Md. native set career highs in every statistical category this season, including finishing with the third most doubles (19) in a single season at La Salle. Welling finished the season hitting .313 with four homers and 39 RBI's.
"He's going to be hard to replace next season," Lake added. "He led by example, and even helped tutor some of our freshman and sophomores."
Welling becomes the fifth La Salle baseball player to gain the recognition, joining Joe Discavage ('72), James White ('72), Brian Schaller ('96, '97), and Pat Christensen ('13). He is the only Atlantic 10 player honored this season.
