PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Redshirt junior
P.J. Acierno birdied the 18th hole on Saturday afternoon to win the Rutgers Invitational by one stroke, leading the Explorers to an impressive third place finish in their first tournament of the year. Acierno shot 71-65-71=207 (-6) to best Towson's Ryan Siegler and Fairleigh Dickinson's Nicholas Osorio by a shot. The 54-hole score of 207 is a new school record.
As a team, La Salle shot 285 (+1) on Saturday, two shots off the school record set yesterday. It was the second lowest round of the day behind Towson (278, -6), which ran away with the team title by 20 strokes at -14. Rutgers was second at +6.
Graduate student
Tonny Aizpun was consistently impressive, shooting a 70-71-70=211 (-2) and tied for fourth. Freshman
Nick Geiman had the Explorers' lowest round with a two-under 69 on Saturday. He placed in the top 20 in a tie for 19th with his 76-72-69=217 (+4).
Freshman
Andrew Reynolds, competing as an individual, carded a two-over 73 to cap his first collegiate tournament in a tie for 38th (76-76-73=225, +12). Junior
Joe Markmann had three straight 75s to shoot 225 (+12) and tie Reynolds in 38th.
Sophomore
Brandon Raihl shot a 77-75-75=227 (+14) and tied for 44th.
The Explorers return to the course in two weeks at George Mason.Â
