PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over the Siena Saints on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium thanks to a goal from
Andrew Connors in the 19th minute and a stellar defensive effort from the Explorers.
Connors played a feed from
Tony Daniele up the far sideline, dribbling through a swarm of Siena defenders just outside the box before tucking the ball inside the near post. The goal was Connors' second of the season.
"I was just looking for a long ball, so I was trying to break them down that way," said Connors. "Tony played a great ball down the line, and my thing is just go right at the goal."
Senior goalkeeper Kirk tallied two saves against twelve shots on the afternoon, including a diving save on a Siena free kick in the 50th minute following a red card against La Salle's
Garrett Keys. The Explorers held off the Saints while playing a man down for the final 40:09, using one less man in the attacking third.
"Up a goal we decided to protect lead and go from there," said assistant coach Bobby Wilkinson. "It puts you under a lot of pressure, that's for sure."
The Saints were awarded seven corners in the second half but the Explorer back line didn't allow another shot on goal following the free kick in the 50th minute.
The Explorers begin a stretch of four straight road games as they visit the Rider Broncs on Tuesday at 4 PM.
