BALTIMORE – Sophomore Joe Hansen scored the game-winning goal in the 69^th minute to lift the La Salle mens' soccer team (4-3) to a 1-0 upset victory over the #25/21 UMBC Retrievers (3-2-1) on Saturday night at Retriever Soccer Park.

Hansen blocked an attempted clear by the UMBC back line just outside the box and struck the ball on the bounce into the back of the net. The goal was Hansen's second goal of the year.

Mike Kirk and the Explorer back line held strong for 90 minutes to tally the third shutout of the season despite a relentless attack from the Retrievers. Kirk turned away both of the Retrievers' shots on goal while UMBC keeper Phil Breno also made two saves.
 
UMBC actually outshot the Explorers 16-6 and controlled corner kicks 7-1. Conor Nichols provided a spark off the bench for La Salle, tallying two shots on goal in 14 minutes off the bench. Andrew Connors also tallied a pair of shots for the Explorers.

The Explorers continue their road swing on Wednesday when they take on city rival Temple at the Ambler Sports Complex at 4 PM.
