PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's basketball team couldn't overcome a second-half surge from Temple in an 86-70 loss to the Owls on Monday evening at McGonigle Hall.
Ashanti Freeland had a career-high 14 rebounds to pair with nine points and three blocks while
Amy Griffin finished with a team-high 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Temple jumped out to a lead in the 1st quarter but the Explorers outscored the Owls 18-13 in the 2nd quarter to cut the deficit to 40-39 after an
Anemone Scheel three-pointer with 18 ticks left in the first half.
The Explorers took their only lead on a jumper by Freeland at the 9:36 mark in the 3rd quarter to cap a 7-1 run that spanned halftime. The Owls answered on the ensuing possession with a Safiya Martin layup to retake the lead at 42-41.
La Salle kept it a two-possession game through most of the 3rd quarter before the Owls pulled away in the quarter's closing minutes. Feyonda Fitzgerarld had a game-high 27 points for Temple while Tanaya Atkinson added 20.
Jasmine Alston and
Adreana Miller both went for 10 points for La Salle, and Alston chipped in a team-high six assists.
The Explorers are on the road again on Thursday as they visit the Rider Broncs at Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J.
