Rowing Announces Five Additions to Men's and Women's Programs

Rowing Recruits

Men's Rowing | November 23, 2016

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle head men's and women's rowing coach Tom Madden has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Anna Green (Berwyn, Pa.), Claire Scobee (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Jennah Syed (Northfield, N.J.) will join the women's program while Ryan Kearney (West Long Branch, N.J.) and Richard Lewis (Ashburn, Va.) will be added to the men's roster beginning in the fall of 2017.

Green is a rower that attends and rows for Conestoga Senior High School. In addition to being a two-time Philadelphia City Champion, she has earned medals at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (bronze), National School's Championship (silver) and U.S. Rowing's Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship (gold). Off the water, Green will be focusing her energy on earning a Psychology degree.

Madden on Green: Anna comes from a high level sculling program where she has really come into her own and proven that she knows how to move a boat. Anna is really excited about being an Explorer and I'm looking forward to the impact her enthusiasm will bring to the team.

Scobee is a coxswain who attends Convent of Visitation in Mendota Heights and is a member of the Minneapolis Rowing Club. She is the captain of her club team, where she earned two silver medals at the 2016 NWIRA as coxswain of both the 8 and the 4+. Scobee will be matriculating to La Salle to be an education major.

Madden on Scobee: As captain and top coxswain of her club team, Claire brings leadership and experience to a vital position in the boat. I am very excited to welcome her to Philadelphia and La Salle University.
Syed is also a coxswain who attends Mainland Regional High School in New Jersey. An accomplished coxswain, Syed led the Boys JV8 to an Atlantic County Championship gold medal performance and a Bronze medal at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in 2016. She will be studying in the Pre-Health Professional Program.

Madden on Syed: Jennah is coming from a strong S Jersey team where she has transitioned to being a coxswain for the boys. Her positive attitude and demeanor helped guide her boat last year to some high level finishes. I am looking for that kind of impact from Jennah when she arrives in the fall.

On the men's side, Kearney is a student and rower at Rumson Fair Haven High School. His rowing accomplishments include a silver medal finish at the Upper Merion Regatta, gold medal performances at the Long Island and Overpeck Regattas in the Varsity 4, and a first-place result at St Andrew's as stroke seat of their Varsity 8. Kearney will enter La Salle as a liberal arts student.

Madden on Kearney: Ryan comes to La Salle from an up and coming high school program where he is making his mark as an oarsman and a leader. I am excited about his ability to be an immediate contributor as an Explorer and his continued development in college.

Lewis is both a student and rower for Briar Woods High School in Virginia. He has earned gold medals in the James River and EVSRA Richmond Regattas, as well as a top-10 finish at the 2016 Stotesbury Cup Regatta. He was also the Coaches Award winner. Richard comes to La Salle as a liberal arts student.

Madden on Lewis: Richard brings a great attitude and work ethic to La Salle along with his athletic frame. He is a previous Coaches Award winner which speaks to how he is valued. I think that he is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential and I anticipate big things from Richard.
