DAYTON, Ohio –
Jasmine Alston hit a free throw with 50.1 seconds left before
Micahya Owens made both attempts from the line with 5.0 seconds remaining to lift the La Salle women's basketball team to a 54-51 win in their Atlantic 10 opener on Sunday afternoon at UD Arena.
The Flyers called a timeout prior to their final possession but the Explorers didn't yield an open look and the game-tying three-pointer from Kelley Austria fell short of the rim as time expired.
Amy Griffn led all scorers with 23 points, going 10-for-21 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line to pair with six rebounds. Owens chipped in seven points and three rebounds while Alston had a game-high seven assists and three points.
The Explorers started the 4
th quarter on a 6-0 run to jump out to a 45-39 lead after the game entered the quarter knotted at 39-39. The Flyers used a 7-2 run later in the 4
th to tie the game at 51-51 on a jumper by Austria with 2:17 left to set the table for La Salle's triumph in the final minute.
Ashanti Freeland was a force in the post for the Explorers, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.
Sofilia Ngwafang also played well down low for La Salle, finishing with a season-high eight points and six rebounds.
Jenna Burdette paced the Flyers with 15 points and six assists while Saicha Grant-Allen added 14 points and 8 rebounds.
The Explorers are back in action this week as they visit Big 5 foe Penn on Wednesday night at the Palestra. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM
